i have wanted to go there my whole entire life ... well, actually, my whole entire life since i was fourteen or fifteen ...
when i was in tenth grade, i read the origin of species (by darwin) and wrote a paper on it, because i am better at reading books and writing papers than i was at doing the science in that particular biology class ... and because i thought it was interesting, though quite dry.... i then proceeded to read darwin's book, voyage of the beagle ... more interesting, more anecdotal .... not for extra credit, but just cause i liked it .... darwin was a fellow who got excited about oddball stuff ... how else do you come up with evolution in an age where you might be called heretic for thinking such a thing ...
i also read slaughterhouse five, cat's cradle, breakfast of champions, all by kurt vonnegut while i was in high school ... i eventually read all of his books and was thrilled each time a new one came out .... one summer of college i read vonnegut's book galapagos, and i knew i needed to go there ...
so, wanting to go somewhere, and being able to go somewhere are two very different things, right? and the galapagos islands are SO far away .... first i was too poor and single ... then i was too poor and married ... then we had a family (twins, oh my!) .. then another baby ... and then we started to be able to afford a trip and the kids were too little ... and then they got big enough, and i looked into it, starting with national geographic adventure travels .... and decided it was an impossible trip ... that cruise was crazy too expensive and my husband couldn't possibly take that much time off of work .... sigh ... no galapagos for me ....
but, i had a new hobby, studying the galapagos on the internet .... lots to look at and read ... and it seemed some of it was affordable ... and then it seemed some of it was affordable and not even too dodgey ....
want to join me in this hobby? interested in surfing the galapagos from your orange couch? (wait, am i the only one with an orange couch?)
check out these groovytoovy sites (i am not endorsing them as anything but grand eye candy for the couch bound tourist with wifi)
so ... this is my first blog post on my galapagos dream ... come back ... read more ... see where it takes us ....
